Hotel Policies

Arrivals & Departures

Check-in time is after 3PM and check-out time is at 11AM. If you arrive early and your room is ready and available we will happily check you in. If the room is not available, we can store your luggage until it is. Feel free to enjoy our private roofdeck and grab a bite and drink or we can provide you with complimentary amenities to enjoy the beach just across the street.

Late check-outs are subject to availability and the following charges apply: 12pm checkout is $75; 1pm checkout is $150; 2pm checkout is $200.

Guaranteed Reservations

Reservations must be guaranteed by a major credit card when you book. Must be at least 21 years of age to check-in. For security purposes, please provide a valid government or state-issued photo ID at check-in.

We charge the first night's room rate plus tax in order to guarantee a reservation. We charge the remainder of the room night's rates plus tax on the last day of the respective cancellation window. All remaining fees (such as daily amenity fee and parking fee) are charged upon check-out.

We accept the following credit cards: American Express, Visa, Mastercard and Discover. We do not accept certified, cashier’s or personal checks or cash.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations or modifications to your reservation must be made no later than 3 pm PST, 1 week (7 days) prior to the arrival date. Any cancellations or modifications made within 1 week of the arrival date will be charged the entire reserved stay (room + taxes).

No shows will be charged for the entire reserved stay (room + taxes). To modify a reservation, please email or call. All cancellations are subject to a $25 transaction fee per room.

Cancellations are considered confirmed cancellations upon receipt of a cancellation email. Modifications are considered confirmed modifications upon receipt of a revised confirmation email. If you do not receive the aforementioned emails, please call or email us.

Pet Policy

We love pets, however, we are not a pet friendly hotel. We admit certified service animals as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The act requires that the animal be trained in a specific service to aid its owner. Comfort or support animals are not recognized by the ADA. Service animals must be on leash at all times outside of guest rooms.

Any unauthorized pets found on property will incur a mandatory $500 deep cleaning charge.

Taxes & Fees

Room rates are subject to the following nightly taxes and fees:

  • 15% room occupancy tax
  • Tourism assessment fee .195%
  • Wellness fee 3%
    • Our wellness fee is charged on all room rates and food and beverage purchases. The wellness fee supports our contribution towards employee health and benefits programs and helps our small business retain our incredible team.
  • Daily Amenity Fee: $35 (plus tax) which includes:
    • Guest-only restaurant
    • Complimentary use of Mini-Coopers (available on a first come, first serve basis)
    • Complimentary use of Mick Fanning soft top surfboards
    • Complimentary use of stand-up paddle boards, umbrellas, chairs, beach baskets, and custom Moroccan beach towels.
    • Complimentary use of Alo yoga mats and wellness content from Alo Moves
    • Complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi
    • Complimentary Malibu mocktail hour from 4-5pm daily
    • Complimentary morning coffee and tea delivery from 7-10am daily
    • Complimentary in-room filtered water
    • Complimentary EV car charging
Parking Policy

Self-Parking for one car is offered at $25.00 per night, with a maximum of one car per room.

Smoking Policy

The Surfrider is a non-smoking property. A smoking cleaning fee of $500 will be assessed in the event smoking does occur in the guest rooms, balconies or common spaces.

Photo Policy

Commercial photography, production shoots and filming are not allowed on the property without prior written consent and an additional fee of $2,500. No exceptions. Permits may also be required.

Group Bookings

Guests traveling with a total of 5 or more rooms are considered a group booking, regardless of if the reservations were made by each individual guest. Group bookings automatically incur an extended 30 day cancellation policy.

The ground floor comprises our Lobby, Boutique, and 12 rooms (Surfer’s Hideout, 1 Ground Floor ADA Room and 10 Ground Floor Rooms).

The second floor comprises our communal Library (just above the lobby), and 8 rooms (2 Upstairs Side Rooms [with partial ocean views], 3 Ocean Facing Rooms and 2 Suites.

The third floor features our guest-only Restaurant and Roof Deck (with the best views in Malibu!).

Bedroom Configurations

All of our rooms feature one Queen sized bed. Our 2 suites (Surfrider & Malibu) each feature one California King sized bed. We do not offer any rooms featuring 2-bed configurations.

Bedroom Capacity

All of our rooms have a maximum occupancy of 2 guests. If you are traveling with a child please contact us directly at info@thesurfridermalibu.com.

Adjoining Rooms

We have three sets of adjoining rooms. All rooms have one Queen bed except for The Surfrider Suite and Malibu Suite which both have California King beds. Please email the front desk at info@thesurfridermalibu.com for assistance.

We offer both cribs and Pack N’ Plays

Rollaway Beds

We do not offer rollaway beds in guest rooms.

Roof Deck bar & Restaurant

Guest Only

Our Roofdeck Bar & Restaurant is exclusively available to guests only. Up to 2 outside guests per room are welcome to join for a confirmed reservation.

Hours of Operation

Our Roof Deck Bar & Restaurant is open daily from 7am-10pm (unless it is booked for a private event). We serve breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks, and all things in between.

Reservations

Reservations are required for groups of 4 or more. Please email us at info@thesurfridermalibu.com.

Room Service

Room service is available daily from 7am-10pm and we offer the same full-service menu as our Roofdeck Bar & Restaurant.

Corkage Fee

If you are interested in bringing your own wine, a $40 corkage fee will be assessed, with a 2-bottle limit.

Other

Airport Transfers

Our Front Desk team can coordinate transfers to/from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX; 22.2 miles / 35.7 km one way) and Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR; 35 miles / 56 km one way). Transfers are subject to additional charges and require 72 hours advance notice.

Transportation

Uber and Lyft are available in the area. Based on our location we recommend scheduling a car share in advance. If you prefer to use a taxi please contact the Front Desk.

Our Front Desk team can coordinate car rentals for you during your stay. We work exclusively with Midway and require 24 hours notice.

Electric Vehicle Charging

We have 2 complimentary EV charging stations that are first come, first serve. In addition, we do offer adapters for Tesla vehicles.

Gift Cards

Gift cards are available for purchase online or on property. Gift cards do not expire.

Meetings & Events

Full Property Buyouts

We offer an extremely limited number of buyouts per year giving guests the opportunity to have an entire hotel to themselves, much like your very own California beach house, complete with a full staff. If you’re interested in reserving the hotel in it’s entirety, please request a proposal and our team will reach out to you as soon as possible.

Sleeping capacity: 20 bedrooms, maximum of 2 people per room; Total sleeping capacity for 40 people.

Roof Deck Capacity
  • Cocktail parties: 65 people (50-60 is most comfortable)
  • Seated Meals (with existing furniture): 24 people
  • Seated Meals (rented furniture): 48 people some text
    • Furniture rental fees and additional coordination fees exist for seated dinners and any other time the existing roof deck furniture needs to be moved. 
Weddings

For weddings, The Surfrider is best used as a base camp for the weekend, a place to have your nearest and dearest stay and a few others join for special events. We do not do “the big event” onsite unless it’s aligned with The Surfrider (i.e. intimate, casually luxe, barefoot sophistication) rather, we are better served for the more relaxed peripheral moments such as welcome cocktails, rehearsal dinners, morning after brunch, breakfast and lunch for the wedding party and a place for your friends and family to enjoy throughout the weekend.

Meeting Space

The Surfrider does not have a formal meeting space on property. With a full property buyout, the lobby and library can be used as an informal meeting space able to accommodate up to 10 people at the communal table.
